I have a bit of a thing for glittery vintage Christmas ornament birds.
This one is a candy container. The body is hollow, and the head twists off so the contents can be reached. I agree. It is vaguely disturbing. It is, however, a glittery vintage Christmas ornament bird.
I like glittery vintage Christmas ornament birds enough to overlook small imperfections, like half a missing beak.
Or, for that matter, no beak at all.
With my household back to its normal size, and me more interested in some mindless fun than a mountain of laundry, I decided to try creating some glittery vintage-style Christmas ornament birds.
I recently acquired a small vial of silver glass glitter and proceeded to see how quickly I could use it. Soon I had glittered a number of things, and there was a faint trail of glitter throughout the house.
(I made these to hang from a tree, which explains why they're sitting on little curtain rings for their photos. Curtain rings often are in box lots of sewing notions, and there's nothing better for holding roly-poly objects in place for photos. Having photographed several thousand Christmas ornaments over the years, I feel I have some expertise in this matter.)
I glittered a tiny vase-like object and filled it with sparkly things.
I see some places (right in the center) where I want to add more flowers. This was an extremely fun project. One that required getting out multiple boxes of objects such as ornaments, silver leaves, millinery flowers and glass bead picks. If you follow the trail of glitter upstairs, you'll find a work area that's an astonishing mess! But in a good way. In a now-that-all-this-stuff-is-out-I-should-make-more-of-these kind of way.
The entire glittery crew, minus the guy who's missing his beak. Now that I've got all that stuff out, I think beak replacement surgery is my next project.

Adorable little birdies!

Who better to perform beak replacement than the Vintage Christmas Ornament Doctor? I'm sure it will be successful under those skilled hands!

I adore these little birdies and they are so hard to come across. Seems like when I do find them they are just ridiculously priced. You did such a nice job. I keep an old egg crate around to keep my newly glittered rounds from moving....smiles...Renee

Dearest Barbara,
This post is missing the most important part - some instructions on how to make my own birdies!
Smooches,

Yes, I agree with Sarah. We Need A Tutorial! I'm guessing all it takes are some styrofoam balls, but the wings have me perplexed. Please advise, because these are too cute, and I can already envision some pink ones on my silver tree!

Amazed by your recreations of vintage ornaments. I have a few of the "creepy" head twisting off birds, myself...

Good glittering girl! Love the birds and have a huge stash (nest) of them myself and kudos for the repairs to those vintage treasures. I love, love glitter!

Thanks for commenting on my blog, Barbara!! Your blog is one of the few that I've continued to read consistently, because it's so full of eye candy... You've got me all excited about Christmas! Your glitter birds look fantastic, and make me want to start glittering things. I saw a couple of ornaments at a thrift shop the other day that reminded me of you!

Wow Barbara, you are doing such a wonderful job of capturing the look of the old ornaments. A little glitter at Christmas is a lovely thing. I'm pretty fond of it myself!

I love your glittery birds, Barbara. I was so happy to find ONE a couple of weeks ago at a thrift shop. It's the only one I have, it's blue and it's very tweet.
Maybe I'll get lucky and find more some day!

No offense, but if there's a facebook like button, it'll be much easier for me to share.
