The alternate title for this post might be, "Swanky Swigs, or Why I Love My Husband."
If you have the March issue of Country Living, turn to page 130. There's a photo of a table set for breakfast, spread out across two pages, that would make any dieter break down in tears. The table is heaped with food, platters of bacon and pancakes and waffles, and a bowl of fruit, and a basket of muffins and a pot of coffee and ... oh, it's stunning. I showed it to my husband (who, I'm just guessing here, does not wish to be referred to as Mr. Oodles) and asked if he noticed anything special about it. He studied the photo and then asked, with a bit of hesitation, "The Swanky Swigs?"
Yesssss! What a guy. He knows that even while looking at a breakfast table that's laden with goodies, he should not focus on the food but the tableware. Specifically, the juice glasses. The Swanky Swigs. You can see the two pictured here on the left-hand side of the Country Living layout. I have the star one that's in the picture, too, except in black, and the horizontal floral stripe ones, too, except in blue ... oh, I could go on all day. How can you not love something that's called a Swanky Swig?
Housewives from the 1930s on acquired their Swanky Swigs by buying jars of Kraft cheese spread ... you know, pimento cheese and pineapple cheese and all those other fine processed foods we grew up with? For anything that was so mass produced, the glasses can be just a little bit hard to find. I don't often see them in antique shops or at shows. I've never found one at a thrift store. Almost every summer, though, I spy a couple at an otherwise unassuming yard sale. They are usually marked a quarter, or, like these, a dime. I leave with a huge yard-sale high. I grab the cell phone and call my dear husband.
"Guess what I just got?" I ask him. "For a dime!"
There's a pause on the other end. "Swanky Swigs?" he asks, with just a bit of hesitation.
I love that guy.
*counting down the days until the yard sale season begins on April 18 with my favorite cheap finds
Hi, I found your blog through my friend Lena (Mrs. Staggs of Merryville). You have found some really good deals in your previous hunts. I collect dog statues and would certainly snap up that one.
I also enjoyed your pre-rummage sale countdown posts.

I do have the March issue, but I haven't had a lot of time to really do more than just glance through it. I'll have to make sure to do that tonight.
My friend Patty just started collecting these. She bought two. One had red tulips on it, but I can't remember the other one. We were at an antique store, and she fell in love with a small cupboard full of them. I bet the dealer had bought someone's collection. I'll have to tell her that they're called Swanky Swigs!
Thanks for your great posts!

I did see the Country Living page - I have it. I love old drinking glasses & have a few. Didn't know they were called Swanky Swigs. Actually, I am not sure what is old or reproduced - is there a way to tell? There must be a book out there. I just like the ones with fruits or flowers & would certainly love to find polka dots & striped ones.
