Today's photos will be suffused with the golden glow of autumn, which means the sun hasn't appeared for days here and there is no available natural light. These yellow velvet forget me nots were plucked from a beat-up hat on a shopping adventure with Margaret. You need to go
visit Margaret and see where we went besides the thrift store and an antique shop. She's a great cook and an even better friend.
Dapper bow ties, from the same adventure.
Although I'm not in favor of store Christmas displays before Halloween, I make an exception for the thrift stores. This little basket made out of old greeting cards is kind of amateurish - it might have been stitched together by a kid - but I like how they used only snowman cards. Does anybody have instructions for making these? We could make someone very happy if we found them.
Did I find cupcake picks mint in the box? No, I did not. I found these cookie cutters a couple of weeks ago at a sale, and it got me thinking. Some things - like cookie cutters - don't look like much on their own, but in a box, they're kind of great. I thought the same might be true of cupcake picks, which are hard to display unless you have a constant supply of cupcakes in your kitchen, which is a very bad idea, diet-wise. So I made a box for them. I felt pretty clever.
I felt pretty happy when I saw a box full of 1950s horse show ribbons. Well, that's not quite true. I stopped breathing and gasped for air when I saw these, and then I tried to be cool and collected and asked the guy at an antique mall what his best price would be if I bought the whole box.
I'm terrible at negotiating. Actually, I guess I'm OK at it, but I'm really uncomfortable with it. However, I've found that in certain venues, and with something I'm sure is worth the risk to my dignity, I can rise to the challenge.
I had to have these. The centers of these ribbons are a satiny button with a gold print of a horse.
It would be worth not getting a blue ribbon for first place to take home one of these instead.
The big pink one, with the gold threads in the ribbon, might be the prettiest show ribbon ever. I'm going to list some of these in Etsy next week. My daughter, who already has her room decorated with horse show ribbons, has laid claim to some of them.
And these I'm keeping. There's a "steward" ribbon for each member of my family, and the "chairman" ribbon, naturally, is mine.
