I went to bed Friday night thinking about Jadite. Not just because I had found this piece, but because I was setting the alarm for 6 a.m. so I could go to a barn sale that promised "many pieces of Jadite."
I wasn't getting my hopes up too high. "Many pieces" means many things. And the Jadite might be all chipped or scratched. Or it might be a stack of saucers and nothing else. Or overpriced. Or gone before I got there.
When it was dark and rainy Saturday morning I was sorely tempted to go back to sleep. But what if? What if there were many pieces of Jadite? And they were in good shape, and not overpriced? And I got to the sale before anyone else?
So off I went. I arrived at my destination before the sale began. The barn was locked up tight, and there was no one else in sight. After a few minutes, the woman who owns the barn pulled in the driveway - she'd been out putting up signs - and told me to come in.
She switched on the lights as I looked around. I saw not one piece of Jadite. I turned a corner, and I'm sure I must have gasped. There was a cupboard full of Jadite. I was the only customer at the sale. If I were going to script my perfect sale moment, this would be it.
Except I did not yet know what condition it was in. Or what the price would be. In my script, of course, it would be flawless. And cheap.
And it was.
I didn't buy all of it (although now that I'm thinking about it....). I could have left with only this coffeepot and been pretty happy. It's metal, but it's the perfect shade of Jadite green. It's not marked, except for the words "Even Spray" on the glass dome. I've never seen one like it and hope I can find out more about it.
These are pieces in the Jane Ray pattern, destined for the antique mall - I kept a few others to round out my collection.
This is a pretty unusual piece - a Jadite Restaurant Ware five-compartment plate. The divided plates (which have three sections) are pretty desirable, too, but a lot easier to find than this one.
There were even some Jadite-friendly accessories.
I really liked the woman who was selling this - we were a two-person Jadite admiration society. She was as happy selling it as I was buying it. (And honestly, she could have priced some of the pieces twice as much, and I don't think I'd have blinked.)
It's hard to know where to start with the aprons.
One for a sale actually living up to its advertisement.
One for a multitude of Jadite.
Very reasonably priced.
Another for one of those sale moments where your knees wobble for a second and you ask yourself whether you're dreaming.
Very nice seller.
Also, Alec Baldwin's sister came to the sale, and a woman whispered to me, "You know, Alec comes here, too." (Alec Baldwin's family lives around here, in case you were wondering.) So we'll throw in an extra apron for shopping where the celebrities shop.
A six. But a six that feels like a ten.
I'm feeling a little woozy just thinking about what it must have been like to go to that sale! And about all the yummies I could put on that divided plate, and have my own little party for one....

I am thrilled on your behalf. It appears the early bird gets the jadeite.
And so happy to hear you didn't faint with joy. That could have been uncomfortable.

Oh my goodness - I can just imagine all the thoughts that it must be too good to be true. How wonderful to find such a score - and that the seller knows these lovely pieces will be cared for just as much as they were before. Beautiful collection of one of my favorite colors of green
