There's nothing sweeter than late-blooming flowers. The ones that pop up unexpectedly, that didn't get the memo that the growing season is over.
The ones that are unassuming, that don't require any fussing, that prefer to stay out of the spotlight.
Ones that keep on keeping on, because the alternative would be - not keeping on.
Plucky, reliable, friendly, humble.
Not surprisingly, also the kind of people I like.
No sales Saturday, but a good day nonetheless: the whole day outdoors, raking leaves, cleaning out gardens, battening down the hatches for the storm on the way. An eight-hour shift of hard work, fresh air, measurable progress. All kinds of woodpeckers have returned to the yard. A fox watched me from the hedgerow and didn't run away when I talked to him.
Should you be on the interstate today, somewhere between Pittsburgh and Syracuse, watch out for a taupe minivan heading north - my parents attempting to get here before the big storm arrives. I'm looking forward to a week of wind and rain and good food and family time. In the words of the old hymn - all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin.
I pray that you all will be safe and Frankenstorm turns out to be a Frankendud.

Safely gathered is a good thing. Stay safe and cozy. I just gathered up the last of my dahlias for one more bouquet in my house...those dahlias are plucky, but more of a hanger-on until frost.

It is always such a joy to find the last flowers in the garden. I will miss them. I hope Frankenstorm does not hit too hard in your neck of the woods. I am a bit east of you and we are also gathered in . Fingers crossed my old black walnut trees hold up against the wind. Have a safe week !

I feel like I should be ripping out all of the flowers in the pots, so that I'm not doing it in the snow, but the geraniums are in their glory right now and I just can't do it!
Sounds like a great way to wait out the storm. Stay safe and cozy!

I hope your folks arrived safely, and that all is well.
I also love the littlest of bouquets gathered from the last of the blooms. I remember once, my friend Mary brought me a bouquet from her garden, soon after I'd had some sad news. They were the last from her garden that year. Being a gardener myself, I knew just how much that meant.
